Mokala National Park
Mokala is SANParks newest park, bordering Imbasa. Nestled in the hills, Mokala’s landscape boasts a variety of koppieveld (hills) and large open plains. The isolated dolerite hills give the place a calming feeling of seclusion. A big surprise awaits when you pass through the hills and are confronted by the large open sandy plains towards the north and west of the Park. Drainage lines from the hills form little tributaries that run into the plains and drain into the grasslands in the nest of the Park. Visitors can view black and white rhino, Cape buffalo, roan antelope, tsessebe, giraffe and many other plains game plus intriguing birds, such as martial eagles and Cape vultures. Mokala is a Setswana name for a Camel Thorn (Kameeldoring). These trees occur in dry woodland and arid, sandy areas and are one of the major tree species of the desert regions of Southern Africa. This immensely important species has a great range over the Northern Cape and varies from a small, spiny shrub barely 2 m high, to a tree up to 16 m tall with a wide, spreading crown.

The Big Hole - Kimberley
One of Kimberley’s major attractions, the Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum, the site of the largest hand-dug excavation in the world – dug by picks, shovels and sheer determination, measuring 215 meters deep with a surface area of some 17 hectares and a perimeter of 1,6 km. The Kimberley Mine site started on or about 16 July 1871. Today the Big Hole is surrounded by original old buildings from days gone by, relocated from their earlier sites to form a magnificent open air museum.

Magersfontein Kop and Battlefield Route
The Magersfontein Battlefield is a must see for any visitor to Kimberley. It was here that General P. A. Cronje and his Boer troops defeated the English forces of Lt Gen Lord Methuen who were on their way to relieve besieged Kimberley. There is an observation point from which there are good views of the battlefield and its trenches has the stunning Highland Brigade Memorial on the peak. One can see over 50 kms from the top of the kop. There is an interesting field museum, Magersfontein Battlefield Museum with a collection of weapons and uniforms. Visitors can experience the battle as if from a darkened Boer trench with all the sights and sounds as the action unfolds.
